Conquer Neck Pain with Thought Power edition by Bruce King Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews
Dr. Bruce King sheds new light on the management of chronic neck pain. In this immensely readable, informative and therapeutic book he discusses how as a successful practicing chiropractor he came upon the realization that constant treatments of manipulation would not be successful in treating all patients with chronic neck pain (and the term 'chronic' is very important to remember in this context) and this `aha' moment leads him to share with us the function of the brain in the chronic neck pain syndrome. He formulated an information therapy system to help his patients address what he felt were the mental causes of chronic neck pain. 'Mental stress can be a major factor in neck pain, and that this stress can be below our conscious awareness.'
He discusses the flight or fight response and the HRV (Heart Rate Variability) Biofeedback that demonstrates that the autonomic nerves when relaxed can relieve neck pain. In addition to stress as a causative factor in neck pain, the subconscious mind has a reaction to mental stress that causes a lowered oxygen that can cause neck pain Therefore muscle tension (stress) and muscle hypoxia are the causative factors of chronic neck pain not due to structural or tissue problems.
Much of what makes Dr. King's book so readable is his conversational style of writing. He urges the reader to think differently `I don't need to distract myself from repressed emotions by causing myself neck pain.' Our subconscious mind knows what the conscious, aware mind is thinking. We feel anger that comes from our primal selves, but we control ourselves. There are three brain levels and the three levels can be balanced the lower brain creates primal anger emotions, the middle brain cares about and nurtures other people, the higher brain understands thought and plans for the future. It is part of everyone's brain function to have a selfish survival-instinct thought like anger. It is the denial or repression of these thoughts that can lead to chronic neck pain. Holding in anger can lead to pain - or being `nice' can repress anger which can lead to pain. `Let go of your identity in order to reprogram it Get over feeling guilty about having anger - guilt leads to repression which leads to chronic neck pain.'
Dr. King ends his book with a discussion of the Six Mental Techniques Talk to your subconscious mind, Categorize your thoughts, Pretend you have Amnesia, Practice the `there it is' technique, Practice creative visualization, Note other areas of Chronic Pain. It is the instruction in these techniques that Dr. King teaches us his approach to the healing of chronic neck pain - by teaching us to doctor ourselves! Grady Harp, June 12
Dr. King takes us on a two-fold adventure the first leg of the journey is his chiropractor's story on how he came to understand our non-conscious mind's ability to affect neck pain. Woven in with this engaging narrative is a scientific understanding of the relationship between our emotions and our neck pain - Dr. King unravels just how and why our non-conscious minds trigger these pain signals, and he provides empowering therapeutic solutions to help us heal. This is a must read if you're looking for the story behind the story on the causes of neck pain.
