The Ones They Left Behind is a sweeping, riveting, historically accurate account of post-Civil War America told through the journey of Harriman Hickenlooper, a Union veteran who sets off on a one-man peace march to heal the wounds of a bitter and divided country by retracing his steps on Sherman's March to the Sea. This time, instead of carrying a gun, he will carry a flag. Instead of marching for war, he will march for peace and find a reason to live and love again.

I was intrigued by the description of the novel’s story line: a civil war veteran, a yankee, recreates the march made by Sherman’s troops through the heart of the Southern States. His pilgrimage was billed as that of “a one man peace emmisary.” As I read-> I was drawn into the story by the author’s flowing prose and down-to-earth writing. In the back of my mind, I wondered about the title: ‘The One’s Left Behind’, but didnt spend much energy thinking about how it fit. In the closing pages, Lucinda, the protagonist’s new bride makes it clear when she says: “Don’t you git it? Their sufferin’s over. The hardest way is fer the ones they left behind. It’s you, an’ me, an’ Rufus, all of us, we’re the ones got to make good on the debt we owe them. We owe it to them to make the world better’n we found it.”Product details

The Ones They Left Behind (Audible Audio Edition) Antonio Elmaleh Sarah Elmaleh 21Cent Imprints Prose Garden Productions Books Reviews
"The Ones They Left Behind" illustrates so vividly, via one man's courageous journey, the way the Civil War affected the lives of so many people, from the North and from the South and from every social stratum, and it exposes the many unresolved conflicts which still prevail in American society today.
The book is beautifully written and extremely moving; I actually felt as though I was there, making the journey myself, along with the colorful characters who attached themselves to Harrison Hickenlooper along his way. I believe this book should be read by every student of American History, because it brings the story to life the way no textbook ever could.
Really enjoyed this book ! Great story and really felt like I knew the characters. Truly a horrible time for our country. Just wish we could be united as one nation under God
The Ones Left Behind by Antonio Elmaleh is a fascinating story of one man's journey to retrace the bitter war that left him scarred and alone in world. As Harriman retraces Sherman's March to the Sea, he relives the horrors of battle which become the conduit for healing within himself and for the country.
The historical accounts of the struggles our country faced during the Civil War intertwined with well developed characters, each with intriguing and challenging personalities of their own, made this book hard to put down.
The Ones Left Behind by Antonio Elmaleh is a page turner and kept me captivated until the very last page. A must read!

There is much to love about this book. It is timeless in its message but doesn't hit the reader over the head with it;rather it gently lays out the relevance to today's world. The characters were endearing and the author did an impressive job weaving together stories, back history and motives. I was disappointed to learn that other than the central figure, the rest was fiction. The story generated a new level of enthusiasm for better understanding the period in time. With the recent church shooting in Charleston, the story is particularly poignant. Bravo Mr. Elmaleh. I am so looking forward to round 2 as I am missing these characters and eager to see how they are doing!
I had no idea when I started this book how profoundly it would affect my perceptions of things. Far from having any political overtones about a horribly political time, it conveyed nothing more than pure raw individual human emotions of mourning, honor, and most importantly, healing. I highly recommend this book to anyone who might, from time to time need to reflect on the things which give us out humanity - in short, to everyone.
Vivid, moving and abundantly educational, The Ones They Left Behind is a must read for anyone interested the American Experience as it encompasses life, love, loss and hope. Antonio Elmaleh should be congratulated here. The depth of his research is equalled by his empathy for the people in this epic drama. He sensually evokes the Civil War era by carefully humanizing it as he articulately chronicles pivotal historical moments. Using an array of literary devices, with real purpose and imagination, he brings the reader in close and allows each character come to life on the page - I turned every page eagerly anticipating the next.

So much has been written and portrayed about this troubled period in American history, and rightfully so. The first (and hopefully last ) time our country was at war with itself. What comes to mind swiftly is " Gone With the Wind " ( book & movie ), and Ken Burns long and contemplative documentary on the subject.
What moves me to write a review about this book is that, unlike its predecessors, it has the courage and audacity to change the aperture, and zero in very intimately on a small group of people from both sides of the conflict . Their feelings, convictions and afterthoughts, and the choices they made to address them, are made palpable so organically that it feels as if one is over-hearing a conversation, rather than reading a book with pages and a binder and all that. Historical accuracy is afoot, as well as exhaustive research that lives quietly in the background so that the nuances from that effort can shine, and movingly so.
I was transported to tears on many occasions; the chapter that explains the title especially so.
Particularly unsettling is that this story could be moved in time to what is happening in the present and be equally pertinent.
History that is not learned from is destined to repeat itself; a cliche because it is true. Read This Book.
This story expresses itself gently, but is not gentle in its message. I think it should be mandatory reading in every history class.
